Truth, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary(1):
mass noun] 1)the quality or state of being true: he had to accept the truth of her accusation, 2)(also the truth) that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality: tell me the truth she found out the truth about him, [count noun] 3)a fact or belief that is accepted as true: the emergence of scientific truths the fundamental truths about mankind. Origin:Old English trīewth, trēowth 'faithfulness, constancy'
So truth is the quality of reality, or things as they really are. In the scriptures we are told what truth is, "And truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come"(2), so truth is eternal, it has no beginning, it has no end, truth in its purest sense is all correct knowing that totally encompasses all things as they exist, have existed and will exist.
Example, imagine I hold a blue ball in my hand, the statement now can be rendered "he holds a blue ball in his hand", this is truth, no matter what happens in the future, what may have happened in the past, at this particular moment in time I held in my hand a blue ball. This is absolute truth.
Now many may wonder, "why is this missionary ranting on about truth, i don't know this?" well let me explain. Their exists in the world we live in a growing philosophy that has been made mention as "whateverism" or "it's really just what you think", "there is no right or wrong, its really what you feel". Prophet and President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Thomas S. Monson speaking on this topic stated, "
We have come to the earth in troubled times. The moral compass of the masses has gradually shifted to an “almost anything goes” position. I’ve lived long enough to have witnessed much of the metamorphosis of society’s morals. Where once the standards of the Church and the standards of society were mostly compatible, now there is a wide chasm between us, and it’s growing ever wider."(3)
The human mind has justified himself into a self destructive thought process, rebelling against reality with the self gratifying philosophy's of so called independence and enlightenment, accepting all things as true. This leads to a loss of direction purpose and self worth, becoming reliant on out side influences that further our self destruction and immanent damnation. And as the fight against reality is at its greatest implausible justification and arguments for such arise attempting in some minute way to escape the grasp of truth.
For all men have been given a way to know truth from falsie, a true reality form a false one, "And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not judge wrongfully; for with that same judgement which ye judge ye shall also be judged. Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ"(4)
May we always seek for truth, accepting truth we find and living according to the truth or light we attain. Remember truth is truth, no matter how much we may say truth is not, it always is, just to be able to recognize this is a testimony of a Divine Creator.
"Dare to stand for right
Dare to make it known
He who stands for all things
